Populist right-wing parties are on the rise. The normative question if populism has to be seen as a threat or may be a corrective for democracy has been heavily debated. This Bachelor Dissertation addresses one part of this debate by analysing the possible positive effects of populist right-wing parties on political participation. I analyse populist right-wing parties’ influence on non-voters decision to participate in an election and examine if populist right-wing parties are bringing back these non-voters to the polls. To test the theoretical framework and my hypotheses I analyse the Alternative for Germany (AfD) as a single case study. Based on election panel data I analyse the decision to participate or abstain from voting in the national parliament election in connection with the appearance of a successful populist right-wing party, the AfD. This explorative evaluation of individual voter decisions reveals that many previous non-voters are actually mobilized by the AfD.
