  • We investigate the learning processes of voters and the role of media contexts in conditioning the impact of TV debates on changes in levels of knowledge. Specifically, we focus on the conditions under which people become informed about the policy positions of the main German parties. The acquisition of positional information is a necessary prerequisite enabling voters to make decisions based on spatial considerations. We argue that TV debates can only boost political knowledge if an issue is raised at the debate which voters have not given much thought to beforehand. The media context may, therefore, promote or limit the possible acquisition of knowledge of policy positions from TV debates. We answer our research questions using information from the campaign panels, the content analyses of the debates of 2009 and 2013, and media content analyses (newspaper and TV news) for both campaigns. The short-term campaign panels of 2009 and 2013 provide information suitable for examining debate effects and their persistence while controlling for individual predispositions and media context. In the following section, we develop our theoretical framework, building on the existing literature on televised debate effects. We then provide an overview of the context of the debates in 2009 and 2013 in terms of coalitions, candidates, and media coverage before we test our hypotheses about the conditional impact of media issue coverage and debate content for incumbent and challenger in the fourth section. Concluding remarks summarize and discuss the findings in light of the research question of the book on the impact of contexts. (xsd:string)
