Web surveys are becoming more and more popular in political science. Low costs, easy implementation and administration are commonly seen as their main advantages in comparison to classical modes of data collection. However, web surveys face some severe problems that threaten data quality considerably. The present paper is focused on measurement error caused by respondents "speeding" through web surveys, i.e. respondents who complete the survey in an extremely short time. Thereby, measurement error is assumed to reflect one dimension of data quality. Two related questions are addressed: (1) Who is a speeder, and (2) does speeding matter for the quality of the data? The analyses conducted in the paper rely on data from the German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES). Two of the components of the GLES 2009 were implemented as web surveys based on quota samples drawn from an German online access panel. This paper uses data from (1) the 4th survey of a multi-wave Online Tracking Study with cross section surveys conducted in a monthly interval in the run-up to the 2009 Bundestag election (federal election) and follow-up surveys in a three month interval which started immediately after the election day (n=1144), and (2) the 1st wave of an Online Campaign Panel Study that comprises six pre-election waves and one post-election wave (n=3789). The results of the analyses show, first, that two different methods applied to identify speeders yield slightly different outcomes concerning data quality. Second, that speeding lowers the quality of the data, though the effect is not as large as could have been expected. Third, the analyses indicate that the inclusion of speeders into a logistic regression has a moderate impact on the results. Finally, the implications of the findings are discussed and further research opportunities are presented.
