According to many dual-pathway models, cognitive less sophisticated activities might be initiated in a habitual manner whereas only cognitively demanding behaviors might activate reflective thinking. Since “party politics” require more effort than “unconventional” or electoral political participation which usually are less binding and event-related, the latter might be activated via an “affective” pathway represented by political interest (Hypothesis I). In contrast, conventional action probably requires a reflective behavioral system. Internal political efficacy is thus hypothesized to be a necessary precondition to initiate participation related to political parties (Hypothesis II), possibly supplemented by political interest. Both assumptions are followed using data from the German National Educational Panel Study and the German Longitudinal Election Study. Multiple regression analyses and analyses of path models are currently ongoing. Initial results from a previous panel study of Turkish and Russian migrants in Germany support Hypothesis I. Regarding party related activities, however, analyses only show partial evidence for Hypothesis II. The findings are discussed with regard to the significance of both variables in the political participation of citizens, and in particular with respect to the importance of raising the levels of political efficacy and political interest especially.
