?:abstract
  • In order to represent citizens’ policy preferences, political representatives need to both address the issues about which their constituents care most and reflect their positions on these issues. The degree to which representatives fulfil these roles affects citizens’ satisfaction with democracy. But does congruence in left-right positions and in issue priorities influence all citizens equally in their evaluation of democracy? Combining voter survey data with candidate survey and media content data from the 2009 German Longitudinal Election Study, this study investigates whether and how political sophistication moderates the effects of representation on democratic satisfaction. The results suggest that left-right congruence affects satisfaction regardless of individuals’ level of political sophistication. Priority congruence, on the other hand, influences satisfaction with democracy only among less educated, less politically interested, and less politically knowledgeable citizens. While agreement in issue priorities represents a useful heuristic for less politically sophisticated citizens, the more politically sophisticated should perceive agreement in issue priorities as a suboptimal indicator of preference representation and thus ignore it.
