"Children of low-educated parents also tend to end up with low education. This paper exploits compulsory schooling reforms that were implemented in all West German states at different times and affected low-ability parents' schooling. This regional and longitudinal variation in the amount of required schooling allows to identify causal effects of parental on child education in a differences-in-difference framework. I find that mother's education positively affects her son's but not her daughter's education and that father's education has no effect. This suggests that one way to improve low-ability children's education is to improve future mothers' education before they give birth."
