?:abstract
  • The paper provides an empirical analysis into the attitude of the Romanian population towardsgenetically modified (GM) food. Data are based on the 2010 statistical data-set of the SpecialEurobarometer on biotechnology. Firstly, some comparative descriptive statistics are presentedfor Romania and the European Union pooled sample. In the second part of the paper,Romanians’ attitudes are explored with the help of regression analysis. Results suggest thatsimilarly to the European average, Romanians tend to see biotechnology in a less optimistic waycompared to other new technologies, especially those which imply the use of renewable energy.Compared to their European counterparts, Romanian citizens tend to agree less with the itemsthat GM food helps developing countries; GM food is good for health and they tend to agreemore with the idea according to which GM food is unnatural. Romania is over the pooled samplein terms of fraction of respondents expressing ‘don’t know’ opinions regarding those ten itemswhich measure respondents’ attitudes towards the GM food. The results of the regressionanalysis suggest that among the most important explanatory variables of the attitudes towardsGM food in Romania we can find secularization, since compared to the most religiousrespondents, the least religious people are significantly more positive towards GM food.Contrary to the ‘deficit model’ in literature, in our case less knowledge does not undermine thepositive attitudes towards GM food, since compared to the most informed citizens, those who areless informed have significantly more positive GM food oriented attitudes. Seemingly, the lack ofinformation ‘protects’ respondents from those messages which might determine their negativeview towards the technology in question. (xsd:string)
