  • "[...] In this chapter we develop several hypotheses regarding the specific way in which the characteristics of educational systems affect the relationship between educational credentials and the occupational outcomes of individuals. The hypotheses are then tested in a comparative analysis of the results from thirteen national case studies reported in this volume. We begin, in the next section with a brief review of some of the major theoretical arguments regarding national similarities and differences in the pattern and magnitude of the association between education and occupational attainment. We then formulate the major hypotheses of the study, describe its method, data, and variables, and proceed to a presentation of our results.
