  • Using the 2013 and the 2017 post-election surveys of the German Longitudinal Election Study, this article argues that a lack of political responsiveness in Germany in the 2010s, when European and immigration/refugee issues emerged as salient, is a notable reason behind the success of the populist Alternative for Germany (AfD). First, the article examines whether there was a considerable gap between the positions of the established parties and voters’ preferences on these issues in the 2013 and 2017 federal elections. Second, the major determinants of vote choice for the AfD over the other parties are investigated. The analysis reveals that the AfD’s success is based on responding to the preferences of Eurosceptic and immigration-/refugee-unfriendly voters who were not represented by any of the established parties and were dissatisfied with the current functioning of democracy.
