?:abstract
  • This article analyzes conceptualizations of the terms “left” and “right” among parliamentary candidates in a multi-party system. Theoretically, we differentiate between the spatial theory of voting and semantic approaches in the field of political theory to explain how candidates provide meanings to these terms. By combining insights from both approaches, we test the propositions that party membership, intra-party heterogeneity and type of candidacy shape candidates’ interpretation of “left” and “right”. Methodologically, this study relies on Structural Topic Models and demonstrates the usefulness of these techniques for analyzing open-response questions about the meaning of “left” and “right”. Empirically, we find that candidates have a clearer and more pronounced conceptualization of the term “left” compared to the term “right”. Both party membership and intra-party heterogeneity have a strong impact on candidates’ conceptualizations of these terms, while the type of candidacy does not seem to matter. (xsd:string)
