?:abstract
  • Despite increasing convergence in employment rates within the EU, there remain persistent inequalities in unpaid work between the gender where women still carry a disproportionate burden. Different explanations for this surprising, yet persistent inequality in the division of unpaid work have been put forward, referring to individual (economic) resources that make a certain division of work among spouses economically rational, the adherence of spouses to traditional gender norms ('doing gender') and the variation of such gendered norms between countries. This article links both levels of explanation - the micro- and the macro-level - using recent survey data on gender specific time spent on housework tasks. At the same time, it provides an example of how advanced methods of multilevel regression models can be used to empirically explore such relationships. (xsd:string)
