?:abstract
  • "Analysis of the religious situation in Germany, articulated by theologians of the two main confessions as well as the media, is principally based on examined assumptions:1. It is assumed that a progressive secularization is pushing the Christian churches to the periphery. The situation in East Germany, where members of Christian churches are a minority, is projected to the overall future of Germany.2. With regard to West Germany at least, the assumption of an increasing pluralization entails the exceptation that Germany is developing towards a multi-religious society, already observable in the cities: It is now necessary to accept or even foster multi-religiosity.3. Within the Christian churches both the assumed secularization and the pluralization of religion are experienced an identity crises, but they are also connected to creative exceptions. From the social structure of small voluntary congregations theologians are hoping for better churches and an explicit and more engaged church membership.Even though cultural support for Christianity is diminishing, a close look proves these assumptions to be need of more scrutiny. The following considerations are based on the evaluation of the organizational and legal structure of religious communities in Germany, on the analysis of some representative empirical investigations carried out by churches, especially and on results of survey research and the General Population Polls of the social sciences (ALLBUS) [1991, 1992, 1994].The results will be focused according to three perspectives. First, with regard to an assessment of current religious pluralism, I will address the issue of the emergence of organized church systems. Then, the present relevance of social forms of religion such as group churches or "voluntary churches"/"sects" in the sense of Troeltsch`s typology will be analysed. Finally, I will discuss the questions of how religion is anchored in the lifeworld and to what extent the effects of religious socialization have changed." (xsd:string)
