?:abstract
  • Work–family conflict torments working parents, regardless of the country they call home. This conflict impacts broader trends including fertility and poverty rates, maternal labor force participation, and gender wage inequality. Yet if work–family conflict is universal in the 21st-century global economy, mothers’ experiences of it are not. Studies show wide cross-national variation in mothers’ reported levels of work–family conflict, differentiated by country-specific cultural norms and social policies. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 109 middle-class working mothers in the capital cities of Sweden, Germany, Italy, and the United States, this chapter examines whether and how work–family conflict varies for employed mothers at the middle of the class structure in the four archetypal western welfare states. The family devotion schema competes with a second, equally persistent cultural schema: work devotion. Sweden, the classic model of a social-democratic welfare state, has long intertwined family policy with gender equality and labor market policy. (xsd:string)
