?:abstract
  • The relationship between fertility and gender roles has been the object of vibrant debates in developed societies. Under the umbrella of the ‘gender revolution’, scholars have theorized that greater gender-egalitarianism will lead to higher fertility in low-fertility countries paying particular attention to how men and women perform their roles in the public and the private spheres. Is this premise applicable to Latin-American countries whose fertility transitions might have been different from those in other developed regions in terms of gender-role change and socioeconomic development? Do the egalitarian-traditional axis of Latin American men and women follow a similar pattern than in Europe in terms of fertility preferences? We use data from the 2012 International Social Survey Program (ISSP) in the four available Latin American countries -Argentina, Chile, Mexico and Venezuela- to explore the link between men’s and women’s gender-role attitudes in the public and private spheres and their fertility ideals.
