"In this paper we present the first results from the project National Patterns of Social Mobility, 1970-1995: Divergence or Convergence? We analyze class mobility data for men in nine countries covering the past 30 years of the twentieth century. We find very clear convergence between countries in their class structures and in rates of absolute mobility. The findings in respect of relative mobility or social fluidity are less clearcut. In three countries - the USA, Germany and Sweden - fluidity has remained unchanged over the entire period. Germany has thus maintained its position as one of the least open societies, while Sweden and the USA display a similar, and much greater, level of fluidity. In the remaining countries, there is a broad trend towards increasing fluidity, though this varies in strength from case to case. Change is most marked in France, Italy, Ireland and Hungary, but because the trend is anyway rather weak, a model of common change over time fits the data reasonably well. Although definitive conclusions must await the addition of more data and the undertaking of further analyses, a tentative conclusion is that several countries are converging rather gently towards the Swedish and American levels of fluidity, though with some countries - notably Germany - resisting this trend."Zum internationalen Vergleich der sozialen Mobilität wurden für Deutschland ALLBUS-Daten aus den Jahren 1980-1998 entnommen. Zudem wurden Daten aus folgenden deutschen Surveys verwendet: ZUMABUS (1976-1982); Politik in der BRD (1978-1980); Wohlfahrtssurvey (1978) und SOEP (1986, 1999).
