Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) is an acquired prion disease linked to the consumption of food products contaminated with the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) agent (Bruce et al., 1997; Hill et al., 1997) and was first reported in the UK in 1996.
