A common fate for duplicated genes is that they become lost in evolutionary time as missing ohnologs (Catchen et al. 2009), although alternative outcomes include becoming pseudogenes (Li 1980), acting as a backup copy of the original gene or evolving new or modified functions (Ohno 1970; Force et al. 1999).
