We construct spatial neighbourhoods based on contiguity and distance criteria: a) two countries are neighbours if they share a border (a vertex or an edge of their polygon shape), b) if a country doesn’t border with any other country (e.g., the country is an island) its neighbours are defined by the 3 closest countries estimated via the Euclidean distance between the geographical coordinates (latitude and longitude) of the centre of each country.
