The chemical extraction of phenanthrene and 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid using ethyl acetate and the analysis of the organic extracts by high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) using a Waters chromatograph with a Symmetry Waters C18 column and a diodearray detector were conducted as described in a previous work [17].
