  • Evidence for the early use of ochre was recovered from excavations in Arnhem Land to the east of the Kimberley where ground ochre ‘crayons’ were recovered from a strata dated to around 53,000 BP using thermo-luminescence (TL) at Nauwalabila I and from strata bracketed by 61,000 ± 13,000 and 45,000 ± 9000 year-old TL age estimates from Malakunanja II (now known as Madjabebe) [26-28].
