Biologic activity of antimicrobial proteins is modulated by secreted proteases and protease inhibitors (PIs), both of which can also serve as antimicrobials in the female reproductive tract and at other mucosal surfaces (Shaw et al., 2008; Wira et al., 2011; Aboud et al., 2014; Dittmann et al., 2015).
