Effects of luminal components on the cumulus-oocyte masses could diminish their ability to secrete chemoattractants that promote directional sperm migration (Eisenbach and Giojalas, 2006), or the oviductal epithelial cells could secrete alternate chemoattractants that disrupt the directional signal.
