LiDAR processing can provide two distinct surfaces: a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) which contains bare earth elevations, and a Digital Surface Model (DSM) which contains elevation information for tree canopy and buildings as well as other features (e.g., shrubs, bridges, elevated roadways).
