The distinction between soaring and gliding flight was easily derived from the flight paths of the birds: as soon as birds started to fly in circles and have a positive vertical speed (i.e. starting climbing), they were considered as “soaring”, otherwise “gliding” when the flight path was rectilinear and altitude was decreasing [42].
