One measure of causality is that the additional of a candidate gene expression covariate should decrease the QTL genotype effect in this model, therefore these models were then checked against the model y = mean + batch + weight at slaughter + QTL genotype (QTL only model in Tables 1 and 2), to observe the drop in QTL significance.
