The WL-OS strain was originally isolated as a model of Hashimoto's thyroiditis, as they suffer from hypothyroidism and therefore require thyroxin to be provided in a food supplement (500 µg/kg food) (Levaxin Tablets, Nycomed AB, Sweden, were administered to all but one batch until 180 days of age).
