To identify RGCs surviving retinal lasering with a competent axon at the level of the optic nerve (ON) head, the fluorescence tracer dextran tetramethylrhodamine (DTMR; 3,000 MW; Molecular Probes, Inc. Eugene, OR) was applied to the ocular stump of the intraorbitally transected left optic nerve 5 days after OHSt application and 2 days before sacrifice in groups II, III, and IV, following already described methods that are standard in our Laboratory [26,43,69,72-74].
