?:about
?:abstract
  • The article examines the policies of state authorities and social organisations in the Kingdom of Poland (1815-1914) towards people with disabilities. Based on new findings, the article argues that the authorities marginalised people with disabilities by not pursuing an active policy towards them. Three groups were exceptions: war invalids, factory workers and the deaf. Instead, most activities for people with disabilities were carried out by local associations, which focused on providing minimal subsistence support, generally neglecting the social or cultural needs of these people. In addition, the article discusses the idealisation of institutions, typical of the century, and the tendency to confine people with disabilities within them. The author also considers the implications of the issues discussed for contemporary policy towards this group. (xsd:string)
