?:abstract
  • The diversity of cities in terms of urban planning means that there is no one exemplary solution for the model of public transport. The competitiveness of collective transport is pivotal to ensuring sustainable development as it becomes an alternative to private means of transport. The purpose of this article is to determine the competitiveness of individual means of transport operating on the premises of the Metropolis of Upper Silesia and Zagłębie (pol. Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolia; GZM). The study assumed the evaluation of competitiveness in economic terms by comparing the time and cost of travel by public transport (bus, tram, train), private transport services and private means of transport (car, bicycle) during rush hours as well as off-peak hours. The study was complete, i.e. connections in all GZM members were verified. The results showed that although there are many possibilities to travel from GZM member cities to Katowice, public transport, while remaining cheaper than a car, is usually slower than it. It should be emphasized, however, that the distance was calculated from the central points in cities, so the travel time by public transport in the suburbs may be much longer than by car. The results show that in addition to route optimization, GZM should simultaneously encourage to travel by car in larger groups of people, which will translate into a reduction in the negative impact on the environment.
