?:abstract
  • The small Pomeranian port town of Kolberg (the present-day KoĊ‚obrzeg) is famous for its stalwart resistance to the French in the siege of 1807 under fortress commander Major August Neidhardt von Gneisenau and Joachim Nettelbeck, representative of the town citizenry and former trading ship captain. A hitherto unknown document - a request submitted by pilot commander Emanuel Schulz to the Prussian minister of justice Karl Friedrich Beyme in 1809 - provides information on shipping traffic and the pilot service in Kolberg during the siege, as well as insights into the strained relationship between Joachim Nettelbeck and the Kolberg harbour pilots.
