What is democracy education? This two-volume work addresses this question in terms of theoretical reflection and practical implementation in different types of schools and subject didactics. In addition to a critical examination of socio-political and pedagogical perspectives, specific challenges such as inclusion, participation and dealing with ideologies of inequality are discussed. With numerous contributions from different didactic perspectives, the work provides an interdisciplinary basis for anchoring democracy education as a cross-curricular task in school education. Volume 1 begins with the fundamental question of what is meant by democracy education. It also examines the specific challenges of democracy education in selected school types. Finally, democracy education is linked to other pedagogical approaches and cross-curricular tasks of schools and teacher education, such as ideologies of inequality.
