  • "This paper deals with scarcity as a fundamental concept of sociological theory. Scarcity is conceptualized not only as precondition but also as effect and function of an economy. The thesis that increase in productivity leads to a reduction of scarcity is modified. The locus of the scarcity concept is historical, not anthropological: scarcity results from cost-consciousness under conditions in which there are alternatives of action. Money, time, and power can be regarded as measures of scarcity. The function of scarcity is discussed as a contingency formula and as a control variable. The emergence and the experience of scarcity are conceived of as system-dependent. The increasing scarcity of time is shown to be a historical process. Finally, scarcity is discussed as the precondition for the fulfillment of functions: for the latter, scarcity may become scarce." (author's abstract) (xsd:string)
