?:abstract
  • At the heart of the European Green Deal, the Farm to Fork Strategy aims to develop a fair, healthy and environmentally-friendly food system in the EU. Central to the Commission’s agenda to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Strategy is seen as a chance to improve lifestyles, health and the environment, making it easier for citizens to choose healthy and sustainable diets and giving food producers, processors, retailers, hospitality and food service providers the chance to make sustainability their trademark and safeguard their future. The strategy is built around three central planks: ensuring the food chain has a neutral or positive environmental impact; ensuring food security, nutrition and public health; and preserving the affordability of food while generating fair returns for the supply chain. Among the strategy’s aims are stimulating sustainable production and processing, ensuring food security, promoting sustainable consumption, reducing food waste and combatting food fraud. To do this, the Commission recognises the need for a collective approach involving public authorities at all levels, the private sector, NGOs and citizens. It is therefore appealing to them all to participate in transforming our food system. To gauge public knowledge of the current system and citizens’ appetite for change, this Special Eurobarometer survey aims to uncover what factors influence their food buying and eating habits, find out what they believe constitutes `sustainability’, assess what would help them adopt a healthy, sustainable diet and find out who they think has a role to play in change. It also seeks to discover what their concerns are and what should be done to ensure the EU’s transition to a sustainable food system. This report presents the results of the Special Eurobarometer survey 93.2 which was carried out between 3 August and 15 September 2020 in the 27 EU Member States. (xsd:string)
