?:abstract
  • In 2018 the European Union celebrated the 50th anniversary of the EU Customs Union. The Customs Union forges the 28 Member States plus Monaco and British territories into a single trading area, allowing goods to circulate freely within the area. All countries within the Customs Union abide by and use the Union Customs Code, providing a system for handling the import, export and movement of goods. EU Customs operations handle 15% of the total world trade with 313 million customs declarations made each year. In 2016 customs duties contributed approximately 14% to the EU budget. As well as facilitating trade and collecting duties, the EU Customs Union protects citizens and the environment from hazardous goods, and provides essential support in the fight against terrorism, drugs and organised crime. This survey was commissioned by DG TAXUD to explore citizens' knowledge of the Customs Union and their awareness of the activities of EU Customs. (xsd:string)
