  • The influence of school, post-school and adult education onpolitical participation. An integrative model. - Politically interested citizens are crucial for a functioning democracy. Therefore, the promotion of political knowledge, democratic attitudes, and valueorientations on the one hand, and political participation, on the other hand, is acentral concern of education. While the positive effect of general school educationon political participation has been discussed since the 1960 s, research in Germanyhardly takes into account the effects of subsequent educational stages except for higher education). Therefore, this article examines to what extent general schooleducation, vocational education and training (VET), higher education and adulteducation affect adults' political participation (voter turnout) when parental educa-tion is controlled. Multivariate analyses have been conducted based on data fromthe NEPS and SOEP. The results reveal that all educational stages have a positive effect on voter turnout, even when controlled for parental education. However, the findings also show that general school education has a greater impact on adult voter turnout than VET or adult education. (xsd:string)
