  • The subject of the study commissioned by the Ministry of Science and Culture of Lower Saxony (MWK) was the performance bonusses of male and female professors working at higher educational state institutions in Lower Saxony. On the basis of the data provided by the higher educational institutions as for 2016, a comprehensive gender pay gap was determined. With a few exceptions the gender pay gap extends various types of higher educational institutions, subject groups, salary groups and age groups. Universities are particularly affected. The highest figure of 34,5 percent was achieved in the humanities. In addition, men are more likely to receive performance bonuses for an indefinite or pensionable period. An in-depth analysis at six higher education institutions showed that male professors benefit significantly more from length of experience, offered professorships and appointment negotiations measured against the average increase in benefit payments. In addition to statistical analysis, attention was paid to the level of knowledge and opinion on the reasons for gender pay gap and possibilities for counteracting. Exploratory talks were held with equal opportunities commissioners as well as guided expert interviews with representatives of the university management. A great deal of space was given to professional biographical interviews with female and male professors. On the one hand, they suggest that women and men attach different importance to income in career planning and appointment negotiations. On the other hand, women increasingly focus on family-related mobility restrictions. The majority pleaded for greater transparency in the awarding of benefits. (xsd:string)
