  • This article examines how the stigma consciousness of the unemployed can be explained. Based on the Labeling Approach, we define unemployment as a status which is deviant from the norm of employment. Following arguments of gender theory, we model a moderating effect of gender regarding both the employment norm and informal social control. By using data from the German panel study “Labour Market and Social Security” (PASS), a positive association can be observed between the stigma consciousness of the unemployed and a second episode of unemployment (for men), the duration of current unemployment, material deprivation, and the obligation to search for a job (for men). The results largely support the assumptions of the Labeling Approach that unemployed people’s stigma consciousness is determined by the extent and the visibility of the deviation as well as formal social control in the form of an obligation to search for a job.
