?:abstract
  • "This booklet describes the most important methods used to investigate differences between levels of an independent variable within an experimental design. Starting with a review of the analysis of variance and hypothesis testing, the authors describe the dimensions on which multiple comparisons vary. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 describe methods in which (a) the basic questions are determined before data are collected, (b) there are post hoc comparisons involving pairs of means, and (c) there are post hoc comparisons of combinations of groups. Chapter 5 applies the methods described in earlier chapters to factorial designs with particular attention to testing comparisons of interaction. The last chapter is concerned with issues regarding sample size and violations of assumptions. \par Throughout the monograph the authors make use of a single example based on a famous experiment by {\it S. Asch} [Effects of group pressure upon the modification and distortion of judgement. Pittsburgh (1951)] on group conformity. Using the same treatment groups, the authors show how each multiple comparison method would be appropriate - depending on the information the researchers sought from the experiment. \par A virtue of the work is that the authors present alternative methods that could be used to answer the same experimental question. In most instances the choice is one of a tradeoff between better safeguards against incorrectly identifying differences as significant and an enhanced ability to detect true experimental differences. Therefore the monograph describes the statistical power of each method discussed." (Verlagsinformation) (xsd:string)
