?:abstract
  • As the internet’s largest video platform, YouTube and its users create vast amounts of data across a diverse range of content. Over the last years, these data have become of great in- terest to social scientists to study production and reception of content and social interac- tions. When starting out, however, accessing YouTube data can present significant chal- lenges. This guide introduces researchers to YouTube as a source of data and provides an overview on how to get started with collecting and working with YouTube data. In addition to instructions on accessing the YouTube API, this guide contains an overview of tools that can be used for collecting YouTube data and recommendations for processing and han- dling it. This guide is written for readers who want to get a first overview of what kind of data can be collected from YouTube, how to access them, and how to work with these data. Readers do not need any technical or coding skills; however, they should have a basic understanding of what an API is and what web scraping means. (de)
