?:abstract
  • The shift in the balance of power between democracy and autocracy is often captured as democratic backsliding, but rarely as autocratization or the rise of authoritarianism. In line with the conception of this volume, this contribution attempts to take a step toward a theory of autocratization. The chapter explores autocratization in the contemporary era, characterizing autocracy by four main features: a far-reaching claim to power of the political leadership; claims of having no alternative; an anti-pluralist pluralist or homogeneous understanding of representation; and a one-sided or pre-democratic relationship between rulers and subjects. Based on these features, the chapter identifies five current types of authoritarian rule, focusing on the two types that gained most momentum in the age of globalization: one is technocratic authoritarianism, which has proved to be evolutionarily the form of socialist autocracy that was able to resist the spread of democracy and the other is the rise of populist authoritarian parties and the transformation of electoral democracies into electoral autocracies. The chapter emphasizes that a theory of the dynamics of autocracy requires considering the conditions of existence, decline and ascent. (xsd:string)
