?:abstract
  • "This study examines to what extent basic personality traits (Big Five) explain individual differences in right-wing extremist attitudes. Building upon previous research, this study considers indirect effects of personality via value orientations and perceptions of anomie and explores how the key variables are related to parental characteristics. Employing structural equation modeling on representative survey data from Germany, the results reveal substantive direct and indirect relationships between personality and right-wing extremist attitudes. Additional regression analyses on the role of parental characteristics show that respondents whose mothers are highly educated are less likely to develop a right-wing extremist attitude. Moreover, those with highly educated fathers are more open, postmaterialist and perceive less anomie, factors which are crucially related to lower right-wing extremism. The effects are above and beyond a transmission of socio-economic status, personality and family situation at age 15 which points to the relevance of genetic transmission and (early) socialization experience."
