?:abstract
  • This chapter starts by showing how views on statistical weighting have changed since the 1960s and present findings about the prevalence of design and postā€stratification weights and the ways in which they were constructed. Next, it discusses the issue of weight quality in terms of selected formal properties, such as mean, standard deviation, maximum, and minimum, focusing on potential threats associated with violating fundamental principles in the process of weights creation. To study the issue of weighting, collected information are presented that concerning the use of weights in 22 international survey projects conducted between 1966 and 2013 in 142 countries and territories. In ex post survey data harmonization, it is important to distinguish between different types of harmonization of weights. The chapter reviews these types. It finally discusses the issue of weighting from the perspective of the data harmonization process, focusing on different ways of using weights for specific analyses. (xsd:string)
