?:abstract
  • This study explores the perceptual structure and antecedents of maternal ideology and male breadwinner ideology, which are closely related to female labor force participation and work-family balance. In particular, this study attempts an international comparison among Korea, the United States, and Sweden. For the purpose, this study uses “Family and Changing Gender Roles (FGR)” data from International Social Survey Program (ISSP). Findings are as follows. First, maternal deprivation ideology is more conservative than male breadwinner ideology in all the countries. This finding proves the strength of social pressure given to ‘motherhood’, regardless of country. In terms of maternal ideology, unlike the United States and Sweden, the only significant factor is age in Korea. Second, different from the United States or Sweden, the possibility that Korean women retain considerably conservative perception on maternal ideology is shown. Third, in Sweden, the 30s shows the most liberal perception toward maternal ideology which is different from the Korean counterparts that show the similar perception as the 60s. Regarding male breadwinner ideology, unlike maternal ideology that age alone has significant impact, male breadwinner ideology is affected by various factors such as gender, educational background, and household income as well as age. Second, in all of the countries compared, women have more liberal perception on male breadwinner ideology than men, with some variations in degree. Third, albert different by country, structure of the perception on male breadwinner ideology is similar to that of maternal ideology. The implications of the findings for policy of work-family balance are discussed in depth. (xsd:string)
