  • For the screening of colorectal cancer, the German healthcare system offers colonoscopy screening as well as the fecal occult blood test (FOBT). Prior to the introduction of organized colorectal cancer screening in 2018, individuals aged 50-54 years were entitled to an annual FOBT and, from the age of 55, a colonoscopy. Colonoscopy screening has proved to be safe and effective (1), while the FOBT is perceived as having a lower threshold. Colonoscopies that are performed as a result of a positive FOBT reduce both mortality and the incidence of colorectal cancer (2). In 2022, 23.8 million people in Germany (28.7% of the population) were immigrants, meaning that they or at least one of their parents did not have German citizenship by birth. A number of studies indicate that immigrants are less likely to take advantage of preventive measures such as dental and general health check-ups, as well as skin and cervical cancer screening, compared to the general population (3, 4). In the area of colorectal cancer screening, no data on immigrants are available to date. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between migrant background and FOBT participation before 2019 for the 50- to 54-year-old age group in Germany using secondary data.
