  • "According to Ethnic Competition Theory, anti-immigrant sentiments are based on competition between ethnic groups over scarce resources like employment opportunities. Previous research has focused almost exclusively on the effect of actual competition, i.e. contextual conditions such as the percentage of immigrants and the unemployment rate, but neglected the role of subjectively perceived competition. In this paper, we investigate to what extent anti-immigrant sentiments are explained by actual and perceived competition between ethnic groups on the labour market. Furthermore, we test the central assumption of Ethnic Competition Theory that ethnic competition reinforces the effect of in-group identification on anti-immigrant sentiments. In order to test our hypotheses, we perform multilevel analyses based on cross-sectional survey data from the German ALLBUS-study (N=3193) in 2006. While we found the perceived economic situation to be negatively related to anti-immigrant sentiments, the actual economic situation and both the actual and perceived number of immigrants didn't have any significant effect.
