?:abstract
  • The general argument of this chapter is that engagement in personalized campaigning is driven by the context of competitive pressure and possible competitive advantage. As a prerequisite to checking if the context of political competition contributes to personalization, the next section summarizes some theoretical arguments and differentiates several arenas of competition. After a description of the data and core variables, we provide a descriptive analysis of different arenas of competition and personalized campaigning. Then we present evidence from a multivariate analysis in order to examine the causal assumptions made in the theoretical analysis. Two dimensions of personalized campaigning are investigated: campaign orientation and campaign action of candidates. The relationship between competition and personalization is analyzed using the cross-section candidate survey of the federal elections in 2013. The context and the possible benefit for candidates of personalization are analyzed with ecological election data and voter survey data from the cross-section surveys of the German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES) merged with the candidate survey. The chapter ends with observations on the changes of the context of competition and a discussion of possible implications. (xsd:string)
