  • Our study aims to explore what different behavioral patterns of problem solving activity exist, investigate their variety across different tasks, and both task and individual characteristics relating to the changing behavioral patterns on all tasks in the context of large scale assessments. Using log data composing a sample of 660 adults in the United States who completed all the 14 problem solving tasks in the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) 2012, we conducted two-step identification of adults’ behaviors with typical process indicators. We identified two disengaged behaviors using P + > 0% method (i.e., rapid omit and rapid perfunctory action). Results of cluster analysis also showed six types of engaged behaviors (i.e., proficient, exploring, hasty, reflecting, struggling, and passive). Overall, the transition of behavior patterns of adults in the first 8 tasks was relatively stable, while it was more complex in the following 6 tasks. The results of multinomial regression analysis indicate that adults' behaviors in completing problem solving in technology rich environments is mostly due to task-related factors, and individual-related factors including age, education attainment, and gender, as well as learning abilities and the use of ICT skills.
