There has been a major decline in civic engagement in New Zealand, particularly in its most politically salient forms such as voter turnout. The lecture traces the trends, discusses some explanations, and discusses difficulties of making empiricallygrounded inferences about medium to long-term social change in New Zealand given the difficulty of conducting basic research.
