"The transformation of social democratic parties can only be understood from a perspective that takes both social transformations 'external' to the party and discussion processes within the party into account. It is shown that social democracy in Britain and Germany can neither act independently from their social bases nor do the social bases entirely determine the fortunes of both parties. The internal transformations of Labour in Britain and the SPD in Germany are conceived of as a series of attempts to revise the current party agenda resulting in decisions that resolve these debates. The causes of a revisionist attempt are located outside the party in terms of social, economical, cultural and political developments that result in a transformation of attitudes in the electorate. Revisionism seeks to bring the party into line with these changes, and the electoral appeal of a party resulting from revisionism along with the attitude dispositions within the electorate decide about the electoral fortunes of social democratic parties. This argument is outlined and tested with respect to the cases Germany and Britain. The transformation of both parties and the relation to their social bases are accounted for through a contextual analysis of debates within the party along with the according social, attitudinal and institutional change. The attitudinal changes in the electorate, their relation to the social structure of a society and the electoral fortunes of both social democratic parties are explored through an analysis of survey results."
