?:abstract
  • Public support for the European single currency is crucial. Due to its very nature, the euro’s legitimacy and survival are dependent on the degree of political and public support it benefits from. Moreover, in the context of the recent economic and monetary crisis, the issue of the legitimacy and the future of the single currency have become particularly salient. Yet, only a few works have studied citizens’ attitudes towards the euro. The goal of this article is to fill this gap. It intends to study the degree of public support for the euro and its evolution over time, as well as to analyze the factors explaining this support. In order to do so, three classical theoretical approaches explaining citizens’ support for European integration are considered: the utilitarian approach, the identity approach, and the proxies approach. Considering these three approaches simultaneously distinguishes our article from previous studies that consider only economic factors when explaining support for the euro. Data from the May 2017 Eurobarometer survey are used to test the three approaches. The results from models of logistic regressions highlight the relevance of all three theoretical approaches in explaining public support for the single currency. Moreover, it is worth noting that the support mechanisms are not quite the same when comparing individuals from the eurozone to people outside the eurozone. Finally, the longitudinal analysis confirms that the crisis has had a differentiated impact on the level of support of European citizens according to whether they belong to the euro area or not. Within it, support for the Economic and Monetary Union and the euro remains high despite the economic and monetary crisis. (xsd:string)
